A Challenge

Public ridicule!  Here's a sample:

You are the real problem ********. You are so full of your self that you think you can pull this kind of crap. You should shut this site down now and save face. We all know who was passing out cards at a recent gop meeting. Please spare us from any further crap.

On Sunday, I will hit the high points of our interactions with TTR, whomever he may be.  Of course, he will deny everything because that is his mode.  If you have wondered why he and others were so intent on destroying our access to my email, you are likely to find out.

It is no accident that I am willing to hand out cards as you point out, and he is not.

Here's my challenge to you, who so freely used my name but lack the courage to use yours:  I will meet you in any public place where Republicans gather.  I will read Sunday's laundry list item by item and I want you to say in a loud clear voice after each item "That is the face of conservatism I want the public to see."

I will say nothing.  We will see who leaves the room humiliated.

I'd like written permission to tape the event and put it on YouTube.

I have given no person permission to use my name on the internet, on my blog or any other.  I am not a public person and have taken significant steps that I not become a public person.  Even public people are protected from public ridicule based on false statements.  Private people even more so.

Today's hint is a common sense one.  It is really easy to step over some bright lines and be called to account for it.  Jurors who look at the whole body of a litigant's work and find it repulsive are not likely to accept any defense.  The interesting thing about lawsuits is the process of discovery where secret identities are disclosed and secret relationships are revealed.

While TTR will rush to paint that as a threat, nothing could be farther from the truth.  A person at war with the legal system over a fraudulent ethics system is especially unlikely to receive justice, so I'm not suing anyone (unless things get really out of hand).

Musings March 30, 2007

Religious posts having no relationship to politics.  After giving some thought to the implications of promoting religious doctrinal posts and the care we would have to take to ensure that members of one religion couldn't be offended by the writings of a member of another religion, we have decided that henceforth we won't link to posts discussing purely Christian doctrine.

This is a very narrow decision and has nothing to do with posts concerning religious/political issues which will be promoted, provided they are well written.

Headline Posts.  One of our goals is consistency.  We have found the very hardest area to be consistent is whether or not to promote one blog's headline post while ignoring another's.  We don't want to send readers needlessly chasing after duplicate links, so when two blogs do a headline on the same thing it creates a problem for us.  We have thought about it for a while and have decided to be consistently inconsistent in this one area.

Today's Sweep may or may not be late.  If it is late, it will be quite late.  As we said before the week began, we have many family commitments this Spring Break, both here and elsewhere.

Sunday's essay  Since a few folks have put us to the trouble of writing to Yahoo to defend our email account, we think it is only fair that our letter to Yahoo be published.  Someone appeared to be trying to make another clever attack on the Yahoo account yesterday and we've grown tired of it.

Fair warning-for that one day this might not be a safe haven for some Republicans.  The essay won't have many hooks and it won't be catagorized, which means that it will sink down in a day or so to be almost unreachable, even by a search engine.  That can change, but we would prefer it not.

Comments:  Note that we have dropped our regular message, hopefully not to return.

In the bubble bursting department, we got a good laugh this afternoon when an El Paso Republican called to inform us that he had been asked if he was the "power behind" this site.  After we stopped laughing, we commented that we were surprised that he still speaks to us.  But, he does.

Our warm and fuzzy moment came when we found out that the El Paso Republican Headquarters has recently added Ronald Reagan's 11th commandment to its decor.

Someone pointed out that there is a need for a lot apologies on our part, and we are giving some serious thought to how we can go about that.  Mostly, we are going to apologize for being a naive Republican.  We expect that we can burst a few bubbles in the process.  It should be fun, at least for us.

Gosh, I don't see Political Pale Horse listed either. Did you forget to include them, or are you going to make them "regret ever taking you on?"

The rule we have had from the beginning is that blogs which write unpleasant posts need not expect to see any of their posts linked for that day, and blogs which do it over and over will be eliminated.

Contrast the post written by PPH with the one written by CCP, which did get linked.  No site which claimed to be "a safe haven for Republicans" and which set its goal as only linking to posts which would not offend Republican women could possibly link the PPH post.

Cleaning up  We realized that we probably inadvertently skipped Clear Commentary yesterday.  They will get two days of top billing.  For mechanical reasons, we sometimes put them off until last and forget to go back and get them.  Our fault, not theirs.

A slight change in plans.  There will be no Sunday essay, and may not be one next Sunday.

TTR's post did not have the impact he intended.  It has been about 24 hours since he published our email address, and we have gotten exactly two emails.  One was a one liner:  Just want to say I appreciate what you're doing. Keep it up.

The other was more troublesome.  It was a claim from Yahoo that we had somehow violated their user agreement and we should stop it, or we will lose our account.

Hmmm.  Since we are not sure what we could have done to violate their user agreement, we are going to ask for clarification.  "Threats," which would violate it, are in the eye of the beholder.  TTR called our email a "threat" and published it.  We think it was a carefully worded appeal for better behavior, similar to a parent saying:  "You've been misbehaving and if you continue you will be sent to your room."

On the other hand,  Yahoo may be objecting to our exposing the conduct of people who we believe are behaving badly.  We lay out a careful case, and let the facts speak for themselves.  We are using our email account to ask the hard questions in preparation for these essays.  We are EXTREMELY careful not to construct those emails in a way that they could be construed as threats.  If we did otherwise, we would doubtless immediately find ourselves facing criminal charges.

Our guess is that Yahoo has no idea what it is objecting to.  What we got is just an automated response to some misguided individual's attempt to interfere with our email.

This site has consistently promoted internet civility and argued against name calling and mindless attacks as unproductive. It has also worked to expose actions by lawyers and politicians that are very obviously not in the public interest.  If Yahoo opposes the use of its services for either of those two objectives, and we doubt that it does, then we need to find a different provider.

Until we get this resolved, we will make no comments.  If we find that a site publishes a single objectionable essay,  we will cease covering it until we hear from Yahoo.  By now, everyone knows the standards and almost everyone is adhereing to them.

If thecoloradoindex.com should cease to function, simply go to http:\\thecoloradoindex.typepad.com/the_colorado_index/

Yahoo has nothing to do with typepad.  This may be an overreaction, but we'd rather err on the side of caution.

Again, there isn't anything sinister about this being v.2.  V.1 has a carefully constructed essay on the very real dangers that essay's like yesterday's TTR essay can create.  The politics of personal destruction, such as those intentionally practiced by TTR and PPH, can have very real physical consequences when people uninhibited by the norms of civilization take them as a call to action.  We have an example where that happened.  We think people should understand exactly what they were trying to do and what the consequences could have been-could still be.

If criminal consequences come from a post where bad consequences were the obvious intention, what legal liability does the author have, both criminal and civil?

We will eventually publish v.1 because it is a part of our hints series.  It makes a great example of why bloggers should not use their names.  This Yahoo situation makes us more cautious, so it can wait.

Bloggers:  If you want your essay to be effective and read, consider the following:  1)  Name calling is not effective even when Democrats are the target.  2)  Use a spell checker. 3) Avoid long paragraphs  4)  Put hooks in your essay so that it has a lifetime beyond a few days. 5)  Use links to others and your own work, but not to excess. 6) Excessive negativity about Republicans hurts all Republican blogs.

Comments:  The goal here remains that we will have a site that Republicans can come to and know that they won't be sent off to a blog entry that they might find distasteful enough to turn them off to Republican blogs.  We didn't intend to become part of the problem, but it is obvious that that has happened.  We hope we have handled it in the most tasteful and appropriate way possible, given the circumstances.

Musings March 28, 2007

It will come as no surprise that we are suspending linkage coverage on a "Republican" blog that appears to be much more interested in the politics of destruction and personal destruction than moving toward a united 2008 front.  The reason might be a surprise, though not to careful readers of this site:

We have made a bet that Republicans want thoughtful commentary, and original reporting that is free of name calling and unnecessarily vicious attacks on Republicans.

Others appear to have made a different bet.

Let the marketplace decide.

Comment:  Normally, we do the sweep between 2pm and 4:30 pm.  We have company, so we started at 9am and finished at 1pm, and did it as we had time.  We may have missed someone we normally would catch, and if so, that is why.

We are still trying to figure out how to deal with headline posts, or if we should do them at all.  We have to be consistent or we will seem unfair.  We're not satisfied that we are consistent yet.  It is something we are going to think about.  If an author doesn't add any material, it is difficult, sometimes impossible to do anything with it.

It turns out that the author of Junction Daily Blog is not a Republican.  We went into his archives and found that he has written things we think Republicans would find quite useful and would even want to promote using the techniques we described this morning.  There is a great essay on a stunt Rep. Merr----- used to keep the CU president from testifying on an education bill.  We had not seen the story elsewhere and it is raw meat for a behaving badly essay.  We are going to take our chances with him.

The reason this is "v.2" is that our new co-author was experimenting and already had used our regular title.  Nothing sinister about it.

Musings March 27, 2007

Beyond Hooks  One of the reasons that we have placed as much emphasis on hooks as we did is that bloggers who do not use them can never expect to use the more sophisticated blogging techniques.  It's much like learning to add.  If you can't add and don't understand addition, you can never learn to multiply, and multiplication is so much more powerful than addition.

Before we move completely beyond hooks, we need to remind bloggers that it is almost more important to know when NOT to use hooks as it is to know how to use them.

For example, a few days ago we were describing our most popular post and how google was treating it.  If you go back and read that post, you will notice that we were very careful not to state the laptop judge's name, only his initials.  Those who were interested enough in looking were being asked to discover his name via a link.

This blog will never again use the laptop judge's name because to do so would walk all over that google search.  Instead of being directed to the blog entry that we carefully constructed, the reader would be directed to the newest entry.  That is why we used the judge's initials.

Likewise, this Sunday, we will be writing an essay on the lawyer who received the questionnaire about which we wrote yesterday.  You will note if you scroll down that we never mentioned her name in that post.  Once again, we were thinking of hooks.  The Sunday post will be as truthful and as effective as we can make it, and we want it searchable under that lawyer's name and other ways.

If we had mentioned her name in yesterday's essay, we would have had to wait two or three weeks, or more before doing the essay to avoid the chance that Google would ignore it.

The next technique we will discuss is the Google Bomb.  The Democrats are very adept at using it, and their bombs are quite nasty, to the point of being stomach turning.   Republicans can borrow the technique without the need to go into the gutter.

The idea behind a Google Bomb is to find some technique that will move a specific search item upward in the search results.  Google allows search engine users to vote without telling them that they are voting.

There are two ways to move a result up that we know of:

1)  When a search term is used and the results entice a google user to click on the item, the result gets a "vote."  Enticement is what the game is all about, which is why we are emphasizing the construction of the best search engine hooks possible-the subject's name followed by a provocative phrase or short sentence.

2)  The more insidious way to vote a result upward is to have associates create links using the name.  Assume that this blog wrote an essay on Senator John Doe and wanted the essay to be planted close enough to John Doe that it would always be on the first page.  We could then get a few of our blogging friends to link to that essay using "John Doe" as the link phrase.  Everyone would have to use the same link phrase and link to the article we wanted promoted.

Of course, the more well known a political figure is, the harder it is to plant a bomb.  Harder, but not impossible.  For example, (this hasn't been done to our knowledge, but we didn't check) someone could write an essay about Bill Clinton's sexual escapades and ask friends to link to it using the link phrase "sexual predator."  That way, whenever someone googled those two words, the essay on Clinton would always come up and it might come up first.  How embarrassing!

Those who would like to see some real google bombs should google the word "Santorum."  The gay community so hated the former Senator that they planted a disgusting bomb and made it so strong that it ranked above the campaign blog site.  George Bush has some interesting  Bombs planted against him, as well.  There are likely others.

Again, we are not proposing tasteless bombs be planted, but if the blogs begin to work together, we can plant truthful bombs that will hurt Democrats even more than the disgusting stuff they have used.

At some future point we are probably going to pick essays that damage Democrats and suggest a few promotional links for other bloggers to use.  We may even create the link and allow readers with blogs to insert them into a sentence of their own choosing.

On March 25th, we admired Best Destiny's collection of links in his Around the Colorado Sphere post.  If we could get bloggers to do a once a week post similar to that one, but with predetermined link word choices, we could make ourselves formidable.

Just something to think about.

A new blog.  Last evening we discovered Junction Daily Blog.  The author claims to be non partisan but we think Republicans will like his writing.  He does a lot of original reporting and his analysis is passable.

The reshuffle.  About April 1, we will slightly modify the order in which blogs are listed on the sweep.  That order, with the exception of one blog which uses HTML and gets placed randomly, is driven by the reverse order of their appearance on our computer favorites list.  We were originally going to randomize the order, but that proved too hard.

Two blogs that write regularly and thus deserve a higher billing are going to be placed at the bottom of our favorites list.  They will find that to be a good thing.  We will try to do this every month, so if your blog gets left out this month and you write regularly, expect to move up, slightly displacing this month's selectees.

Face the State  We're not sure exactly what it is yet, so we're not sure how it will be handled.  Make no mistake, though, we are quite happy to note its appearance.

About This Site

  • Copyright Notice
We had a little problem with a new site that published our material as though it was theirs omitting only the links. All items on this blog copyright a watcher on the date published. Fair use exerpting is authorized and encouraged with links back to the original essay.
  • email address
Avoiding the harvesters: We do have a tipline, so that's a start. At thecoloradoindex, of course, followed by the typical dot com. Sorry to be cryptic, but we've already been bit by spam city and our address only appeared on the net once.
  • Hints and Rules
One goal of this site is to help Republicans write essays that are as effective as possible, and by that we mean essays have search engine sticking power. Bloggers may wish to look at the Hints and Rules category from time to time.
  • TheColoradoIndex
A site that promotes other Colorado Republican writers with links. The site also publishes essays that Democrats and their media fans might find unfriendly, but fair. Sometimes substantially identical essays will be written about individual Democrats who participated in a group event. The purpose is not to bore readers but to have individualized searchable essays that will call as much attention to that one individual's actions against the public interest as possible.
